The Concentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Sewage Sludge in Relation to the Amount and Origin of Purified Sewage

چکیده
The present study included an evaluation of the content of 16 PAH in sewage sludge produced in 15 sewage treatment plants in southeastern Poland. Besides determining PAH content, the influence of the amount and origin of the sewage purified in the PAH content was also evaluated. Possible PAH sources in sewage were also evaluated by the calculations of the mutual relations. The results obtained showed a clear differentiation in the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The content of the PAH sum ranged from 2039.9 to 36439.8 μg/kg. The predominant contribution of 3 and 4-ring PAHs was observed. A significant relation was only found in the case of properties of the sludge purified and the PAH content (-0.547, at P=0.05). Evaluating relations between individual PAHs, a statistically significant relation was observed between the sum of the PAHs determined and the content of fluoranthene, chrysene and benzo[b]fluoranthene.

Comparison of PAHs uptake by selected Monocotyledones and Dicotyledones from municipal and industrial sewage sludge
The study was focused on two goals: (i) the confirmation of the existence of a general relation between the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sewage sludge and in plants growing in it, regardless of the type and content of sewage sludge, and (ii) if so, the answer to the question whether the uptake of PAHs by plants depends on their type. To realize the set aims, the content...

The disposal and the treatment of sewage sludge is an expensive and environmentally complex problem. In this work, a lipopeptide biosurfactant extracted from corn steep liquor was used as ecofriendly and cost-competitive alternative for the mobilization and bioremediation of fluorene in sewage sludge. Results have demonstrated that this biosurfactant has the capability to mobilize fluorene to t...

In addition to the positive effects on the physical, chemical and biological soil properties of the application of sewage sludge into the soil, there is often an increase of both organic and inorganic pollutants in the soil. One of the most popular organic xenobiotics frequently present in sewage sludge are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The aim of this study is to determine possibilities fo...

The research comprised of studying the effect composting sewage sludge with sawdust and vermicomposting with earthworm Eisenia fetida has on the degradation of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Raw rural sewage sludge prior composting was more contaminated with PAHs than urban sewage sludge, in both cases exceeding EU cutoff limits of 6 mg/kg established for land application. Dibenzo[...

The aim of the study was to define the relationship between the concentration of PAHs in sewage sludge at a particular location and their amount in various plant materials growing on it. The credibility of the results is enhanced by the fact that sewage sludge from two separate sewage-treatment plants were selected for their influence on the content of PAHs in three plant species growing on the...
